Walnut Grove Release Record History
Walnut Grove’s operating history creates an unusual record-search trap. The prison was established in 1990. It was privately operated beginning in 1996, closed in 2016, and reopened under MDOC in November 2021. Current official information describes it as an active MDOC state prison. Older pages that call it closed or privately operated may be accurate for an earlier period but are not reliable descriptions of present custody.

Walnut Grove MDOC Release Fields
The MDOC public detail is a status summary, not a historical release certificate. That exact label means the date is calculated and prospective. It should not be rewritten as an actual release date.

MDOC also calculates an ERS date and a maximum release date. Earned time depends on the governing statute, offense and sentence dates, eligibility, classification, and department rules. No universal 85 percent formula safely predicts every Walnut Grove release.
Walnut Grove Transfer Release Differences
A location change from Walnut Grove to another MDOC institution is continued incarceration. It should be described as a transfer. A detainer can also affect the destination. A detainer is a request or notice that another authority may take custody. If MDOC releases a person to a receiving agency, the prison release record should be read with the destination or detaining authority. That event ends one form of custody but may not place the person in the community. Ask for both the MDOC release type and the receiving custodian when that distinction matters.
Court records supply further context but not the gate time. A Leake County judgment can show the sentence, jail credit, later amendment, or revocation that changed MDOC’s computation. MDOC remains the source for how those orders were applied and when Walnut Grove custody ended. Comparing the judgment with the time sheet is more reliable than subtracting dates by hand.
LEAKE CCF Walnut Grove Records
Leake County’s state and local custody overlap can obscure the path to Walnut Grove. The county facility may appear in MDOC records as “LEAKE CCF,” even though the sheriff also operates ordinary county-jail functions there. A person leaving the county roster for Walnut Grove was transferred into or within state custody, not released to the community.
Use the county booking number for the sheriff’s transfer entry and the MDOC number for the state movement. The county record may name the receiving custodian or destination. The MDOC detail can then show Walnut Grove as a location and provide the sentence fields. Those two records document the chain without calling a state-prison transfer a release.
If the person later leaves Walnut Grove on parole, ERS, or discharge, that later event belongs to MDOC. The original sheriff cannot certify the eventual state release merely because the county held the person first. This custody-type fork is the safest way to reconcile the two facility names.
The reverse path also needs care. A person can leave Walnut Grove for LEAKE CCF while remaining an MDOC prisoner. The county-operated setting does not turn that transfer into a local jail release. Current legal custody and the MDOC number control the search route.
